Effects of nitrogen fertilization on growth and vivo Cl- and Na+ accumulation of winter wheat under NaCl stress

  • A pot experiment was conducted at glasshouse to study effects of nitrogen fertilization on growth and in corpore accumulation of Cl- and Na+ in winter wheat under NaCl stress. Urea and NaCl were served as the source of nitrogen and salt respectively. Experimental design was randomized complete block designs with three replications. Four rates of urea were applied: N 0 ( no N applied), 0.1, 0.30 and 0.45 g/kg soil and four levels of NaCl were applied to make for soil salinity: 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0g/kg soil. Urea and NaCl was single base applied after evenly mixed with the experiment soil. Seeds were sowed after forcing of germination, and thinning was carried out at 3-leaf stage. 5 plants for each pot were sampled at tillering stage. Distilled water was used to keep all treatment at same water content. The results indicated that nitrogen fertilization could increase plant height and leaf area significantly, and in turn increased wheat yield under NaCl stress conditions. The possible regulation mechanism of nitrogen fertilization was the augment of plant nitrogen content, resulted in the decrease Cl- accumulation at early growth period and Na+ accumulation at late growth period. N/Cl ratio and N/Na ratio of plant,as new measurement indexes to appraise effects of nitrogen fertilization to reduce (accumulation) of Cl- and Na+ in winter wheat was also brought forward.
