Abstract:
China government invests large amount of research capitals to deal with soil degradation of farmland, but the mitigation effects of proposed pathways are far beyond success. Based on the historical agricultural practices and modern scientific researches, we regard that the adoption of green manure as a critical approach to addressing the issues, and proposed a perspective of “green manure improving soil health endogenously”. The main connotation of this perspective is that green manure, being integrated into the agricultural production system, activates and fixes environmental nutrients through its own vital process, and then returns them and abundant organic matter into farmlands, resulting in overall improvement of soil properties. Thus, green manure is fundamentally different from other exogenous organic and similar fertilizers, namely, green manure has an endogenous effect in driving soil health. Green manuring pattern possesses distinct “organic and live” characteristics to drive the cycling of soil-environmental nutrients, improve soil structure, and optimize soil biological traits by inner force. These mechanisms can be manifested as follows: 1) high ability of organic conversion drives soil carbon renewal and sequestration in farmland; 2) supplement of soil nitrogen pool through symbiotic nitrogen fixation and enhanced activity of free-living nitrogen fixation; 3) rapid soil nitrogen cycling due to the absorption, interception, and transformation of soil N by green manure; 4) activation and transformation of soil phosphorus, potassium, and medium and trace elements; 5) the biological tillage effect due to huge volume of root systems that improves soil structure; 6) relatively suitable C/N ratio, companied with the rapidly cycling of organic matter and nutrients, improves the soil biological community and function. Therefore, the integration of “soil nourishing production pattern + inorganic + organic”based on green manure is an alternative and a feasible solution to address challenges such as soil degradation and agricultural non-point source pollution, and also encompasses a series of valuable scientific and technological issues. There are about 33.4 million hectares of agricultural regions in China that have the potential for green manure planting, China has sufficient conditions to establish this unique triple-combined pathway.
